Nee Tahi Buhn continues to grow and expand on various business opportunities throughout our territory. These ventures are carefully formed to align with our beliefs, while bringing sustainable revenue streams for our nation.
FORESTRY
Chinook Community Forest
The Chinook Community Forest (Comfor) is comprised of 9 Partners (6 First Nations including Nee Tahi Buhn, 2 Regional Districts, and the Municipality of Burns Lake). The Chinook Community Forest has 9 Directors, a Manager and an Administrative Assistant/Bookkeeper (currently vacant).
Under a revenue sharing agreement, in 2023, Chinook Comfor’s Allowable Annual Cut (AAC) will drop from 150,000 m3/yr to 65,000 m3/yr, due to large salvage from the 2018 fires.
Dicin LP
Dicin LP is a newly formed company for the 6 First Nations including Nee Tahi Buhn, in the Lakes Timber Supply Area. Dicin LP was set up to hold a 100,000 m3 low volume Receiving Licence from the BC government, and the Board of Directors nominated Kieran Broderick, advisor for Nee Tahi Buhn, to be the President of Dicin LP in 2020.
Nee Tahi Buhn Woodland Licence
In 2016, NTB was awarded a First Nation Woodland Licence (FNWL), under the Gale Lake and Murdoch Lake Forest Development Units. This FNWL includes a 6,200 m3 AAC per year (5 year cut control), which will drop due to recent fires and the mountain pine beetle.
Nee Tahi Buhn’s Woodlot W059
NTB’s Woodlot W059 includes an Annual Allowable Cut of 1,100 m3/year, which was harvested in 2023 and sold to West Fraser Mills. All revenue from harvesting W059 was paid to Hunust’ot’en Investment Corp with planting to take place summer 2023.
Forest and Range Consultation and Revenue Sharing Agreement (FCRSA)
Nee Tahi Buhn has an FCRSA that was signed in March 2023 by Chief and Council and will be in effect until March 31, 2024. Negotiations have been ongoing with the BC government with respect to increasing the revenue sharing payments to First Nations in BC.
OIL AND GAS
Coastal Gas Link (CGL) Pipeline Project
The Coastal Gas Link’s Pipeline spans from Groundbirch (between Chetwynd and Dawson Creek) to Kitimat. Nee Tahi Buhn undertook a Traditional Use Study on the Project in 2014 and met with CGL on several occasions to discuss important areas for Nee Tahi Buhn. We continue to have two Nee Tahi Buhn Construction Monitors on the project.
MINING
Endako Mine
The Endako Mine, located near Fraser Lake, is one of the largest molybdenum mines in North America with the potential for approximately 148,000 tonnes of molybdenum. Centerra Gold now is the owner of the Endako Mine, which has been in care and maintenance for several years. Nee Tahi Buhn representatives are part of the Water Quality Working Group (WQWG) meetings with Centerra, Hatfield, Nadleh First Nation, Stellaten First Nation and BC Environment representatives to ensure environmental concerns are addressed.
BC HYDRO
BC Hydro is proposing a new transmission line, called the North Coast Electrification Project, that would follow their existing transmission line in two sections in our area: Glenannan to Telkwa Transmission Project, as well as their proposed Prince George to Glenannan Transmission Project. Nee Tahi Buhn Lands and Resources Department will be attending meetings with BC Hydro over the coming months.
