The Rich History of the Nee Tahi Buhn Band

As Described by Our Elders

As with all First Nations, we have a long history of changes over time. The Nee Tahi Buhn Band has been moved, renamed, seen challenges, and has adapted. Our history, as told by our Elders, describes our long past that got us here. Our present day history is as described below.

Nee Tahi Buhn is the name for Francois Lake, and means, “it fills at one end and empties at the other.” Originally called the Francois Lake Band by the Federal Government, in 1960, the Francois Lake Band joined with Decker Lake, Maxim Lake and Skin Tyee Bands to form the Omenica Band. In 1984 the Omenica band divided into Nee Tahi Buhn and Broman Lake Bands.

Our Nation continued to evolve and in 2000 the Skin Tyee Band and Nee Tahi Buhn separated to become independent Bands. Nee Tahi Buhn remains an independent Band not currently affiliated with any tribal association or other groups.
